Crafty Failures, Episode 1

I'm thinking of starting a new series on my blog about all of my attempts - and failures - at crafting. Because crafty blogs seem to be all the rage these days, and every single one of those crafty bloggers seems to have it all together, I think it's time for me to start a series that represents those of us who live in reality. I mean, whose house really looks like the houses that crafters post on their blogs? And when do they have time to do all those crafts AND keep their houses clean? They occasionally brag about their kids, but there are never messes in their lovely pictures of their Pottery Barn houses, so their kids must either be kept in cages, or sent off to boarding school.

In any case, once in a while, I think that I might try something creative. I've been interested in card-making for some time now, so I thought that I might get started doing it as a hobby. Maybe I will eventually sell my wares and make a little money on Etsy.

So, for Christmas, I requested, and received, one of these:
It's a Sizzix "Big Shot" die cutting and embossing machine. I also acquired several die cuts, embossing folders, and cool papers. I also took time to organize my other craft materials into nice little drawers and compartments, like so:
After obtaining, organizing, I began the arduous task of creating. By the way, when one assembles die cuts, embossed papers, cardstock, ribbons, buttons, stickers, and rubber stamps all in one place, it becomes an ADD nightmare. I was so overwhelmed by it all, that this was my first attempt. I don't know, though - Etsy's standards may be a little higher than this:
But seriously, I eventually came up with this:

But I came to the conclusion that, while cardmaking is a nice hobby and a nice stress-reliever (after the stress of deciding which creative elements to use), I don't think I'll be producing cards in bulk any time soon.

Stay tuned for my next episode of "Crafty Failures."

  1. I know what you mean. I consider myself very creative, but whenever I go into one of those paper-craft shops - or even the few rows at Michael's of Jo-Ann's, I am thrown into overwhelm and CANNOT decide what to do. With nothing, I can be creative.....with the world of materials at my fingertips, I go catatonic. I have actually had to resort to using their PATTERNS (something so totally against what I stand for), simply because I wouldn't be able to get my project done unless I did. Sometimes crafting your own cards is cheaper - i.e. Graduation cards is an example. But, that was a time when I ashamedly had to resort to a canned design. Embarrassing. Still, once away from the shop, I had fun with it, and even branched out creatively a bit. (This is more fun with friends, BTW.)
